The Medical Missions Committee, in a team up with the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), conducted a surgical mission last Saturday, February 4. The committee, chaired by Andrew Prieto, a cardiologist, is under the Community Service directorate under Dir. Chris Ferareza.
This was a rare two-in-one mission, with surgeons from the University of the Philippines-PGH medical community performing operations on ten patients suffering from two different ailments—eight women with breast cancer and two with thyroid conditions.
Performing the operations was a complement of ten resident UP-PGH surgeons-- Carlos Miguel Perez, Maria Cesar del Rosario, Karyl Joy Nonan, Michelle Francisco, Ralph Rapacon, Christelle Almanon, Angeli-Jef Favib, Aristeo Poncio, Pocholo Bernardo, and Joji Depano, five anesthesiologists and a number of nurses and utility workers.
This is the fourth surgical mission this Rotary year. The others were a breast mission for 12 women on September 10, 2016; a laparoscopic cholecystectomy for 15 patients on September 24; and another for colostomy closure with 11 patients on November 5, for a total of 45 so far.
A fifth is scheduled for February 18. It will raise the aggregate number of patient-beneficiaries since the start of the project in 1989-1989 (during the term of PP Rey Adriano), which currently stands at 6,551 (average of 234 patients/year).
